Aluminum Cable & Wire – A Peek Into the Future
Industry leader Komax wants you to know the benefits of using aluminum wire, something most in the industry have forgotten. Compared to the more popularly used copper alternative, aluminum’s light weight means “the weight of a mid-range car can be reduced by two to three kilograms with the use of aluminum cabling, which in turn decreases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.” They also pointed out that aluminum is more readily available than copper. The car manufacturing industry could really reap the benefits of switching to aluminum from copper when it comes to production.
So why aren’t more people using aluminum? Komax notes that aluminum wiring is not without its downsides. For example, it is “less strong than copper” and more easily corrodes. However, Komax states that “the advantages outweigh the disadvantages with regard to a bright future for aluminum as a cabling material.”
They also note that automatic crimping or processing of aluminum cable can mean you need special requirements when it comes to machines ability to gently feed the aluminum cable / wire. They also draw attention to the need to use special wire stripping blades this material.
